Students are treated as individuals at Birkdale High School and we aim to support each young man to achieve his best.
The Hub is our personalised learning support centre, which is used to support the learning of groups and individual students. Our aim is to help all students fulfill their potential and achieve success in their learning. Our Teaching Assistants are based here and provide specific and individual support to a number of students, both inside and outside of the classroom.
The Hub is open daily before and after school for support with classwork or homework. During lunch time, access to the Hub is by invitation only and generally reserved for our most anxious boys, who need some quiet time at lunch. During the school day, the Hub is used for interventions such as mentoring, small group support and tuition.
If your son has any special education needs or disabilities (SEND), these will be known to the SENDCO, Mrs Weir, who will put a plan of support in place straight away. All teaching staff are familiar with a range of conditions and disabilities and have annual training to ensure your son will have the quality teaching and inclusivity that he deserves. Our Learning Support Assistants offer outstanding care and support for any children with SEND and are usually focused on supporting a particular year group throughout their schooling; so pupils have a familiar and friendly face they can go to if they need any support throughout their time at Birkdale High School. As well as support from an adult, some of the additional interventions we offer are:
For our new year 7 students, we run an enhanced transition programme for those who may need extra support during their transition to High School.
Birkdale High School also work closely with Sefton Council’s Inclusion Team to provide the best possible support for your son, calling upon outside agencies if needed. Sefton Council’s “local offer” outlines the support you can access as a parent, and can be found at:
